RADKO MAŠATA (1933 - 1999)

We are preparing a retrospective exhibition and a catalogue raisonné of the work of the painter RADKO MAŠATA (1933–1999).

Radko Mašata, originally from Vsetín, spent most of his life in Olomouc, where he also passed away. Between 1951 and 1954 he studied at the Faculty of Education of Palacký University in Olomouc, where he acquired solid foundations in the visual arts. In the following years, specifically from 1964 to 1974, he worked there as a teacher at the People’s School of Art, passing on his knowledge and experience to students of the visual arts.

Throughout his artistic career, he focused primarily on painting and drawing; however, from 1969 onward he also expanded his repertoire to include tapestry and art protis, thereby broadening the expressive possibilities of his work. His works have been exhibited since 1961, not only in solo exhibitions but also as part of group presentations.

The work of Radko Mašata was characterized by several thematic areas, most notably his precisely composed still lifes and decorative tapestries, rich in poetry and subtle aesthetics. Another fundamental motif was landscape, which played an important role in his oeuvre. He drew inspiration from drawings and studies made during his travels—whether in his native Valašsko region, the surroundings of Olomouc, the Slovak countryside, or more distant foreign destinations. In his paintings, he was able to capture with exceptional sensitivity the beauty hidden in ordinary scenes and everyday objects, making his work appealing to a wide spectrum of viewers.
